MercyVet offers a variety of positions. Although cross training is valued, and at times everyone must "trade hats", there are designated positions in which potential employees might feel more comfortable.
Veterinary Technician
A vet tech is to the veterinarian what the nurse is to the doctor-indispensable. They are responsible for the care of in-hospital patients. They are client educators, surgical nurses, phlebotomists and X-ray technicians. They maintain the surgery and treatment rooms, the laboratory and pharmacy and supervise veterinary assistants and kennel staff. A registered, licensed technician (RVT or LVT) has completed a two-year program from an accredited college. An unlicensed technician trains on the job, and is eligible for certification after five years of clinical work and passing a State Veterinary Board exam.
Veterinary Assistant
The clinic Jack (or Jill) of all trades, an assistant is typically a non-licensed technician who assists both the doctor and the technician. She/he might monitor hospitalized patients, track inventory, assist with front office duties, supervise kennel and volunteer staff, and fill in for vacationing or absent co-workers.
Receptionist
Veterinary receptionists are the windows to the world of clinical practice.
They are the smile that greets the in-coming clients and the warm and caring voice on the phone. This position requires multi-tasking, salesmanship, problem solving and a love for animals AND people. Fielding technical calls, performing simple bookkeeping and clerical functions, and assisting the doctors, techs and assistants at a moment's notice are but a few of the receptionist's duties.
Kennel Technician
The kennel staff is responsible for the physical appearance of the clinic-making sure that the place looks, smells and feels clean and comfortable. Their duties might include housekeeping, laundry, caring for in-hospital patients and lodgers, stocking exam, treatment and surgery rooms, running errands, assisting the doctors, techs and assistants, and supervising volunteers. Although their work is often "behind the scenes" their presence is key to our comfort and peace of mind.
Volunteers
MercyVet enjoys hosting an ever-growing family of volunteers. High school students fulfilling community service contracts, allopathic veterinarians and laypeople interested in learning more about holistic veterinary medicine, and animal lovers from diverse backgrounds convene to offer their service in exchange for the joy of sharing knowledge with our staff and working with our patients. We deeply appreciate our volunteers and we strive to help make their time with us interesting and enriching.
